A Boy Named Mattie
Words & Music by Kathy Martin©2004
I just met a most amazing poet
So much wiser than his 13 years would imply
With optimism key to his life’s mission
Conveying it to us all through his questions of why
His name was Mattie
He was the picture of hope and good cheer
A portrait painted in courage
His dream of peace crystal clear
Then he said it is all about our choices
And in the attitudes and habits we must change
How we must lend compassion whenever it’s lacking
And shed love in every shadowy place of pain
This boy named Mattie
He was the picture of hope and good cheer
A portrait painted in courage
His dream of peace crystal clear
Yet the war we’re still waging grows long
The need for humanity, strong
While the insanity rages on and on and on and on…
There is clarity from the mouth of babes….
And God said a child would lead us
I think He sent us Mattie
Yes, I heard the words of this most amazing poet
On the same day that he lost the battle for his life
His is a simple yet giant legacy to realize
And now it’s our responsibility to ask why
For a boy named Mattie
His wish was for our hope and good cheer
His lesson, kind inspiration
To teach us how not to fear
Yes, we may find peace
if we choose to care
We may find peace
if we choose to share
We may find peace
if we choose to spread the word
that all the hate must cease
Mattie’s shown us how…
he said that it’s all in our choices
So choose Peace
for the whole wide world
choose Peace
for all of ourselves
choose Peace for a little boy,
A boy named Mattie...
Choose peace. Choose peace.
… I just met the most amazing poet…..
Mama’s Little Darlin’
Words & Music by Kathy Martin©1997
Mascara-ed lashes on innocent eyes
A tinge of pink on the mouth of babes
Just turned 4, aren’t you amazed
She’s Mama’s little darlin’
A song and dance for your approval
She’s coached and ready to perform
She has no concept of what’s normal
She’s Mama’s little darlin’
Mama’s little darlin’, Mama’s little dear
She’s not as picture perfect as she’s learned how to appear
No, she’s Mama’s little darlin’
Unaware her Mama’s living vicariously,
as if she should
For the price of her precious childhood
Mama’s little darlin’
Doesn’t have a friend her own age
Wouldn’t know how to relate
She’ll be all grown up before she’s 8
She’s Mama’s little darlin’
Mama’s little darlin’, Mama’s little dear
She’s not as picture perfect as she’s learned how to appear
No, she’s Mama’s little darlin’
No time for fun, no pre-school games
No nursery rhymes or riddles
The camera’s rolling, all eyes are watching,
And Mama’s in the middle… oh
And what’s life like from such a height
At such a tender age
When pedestal becomes a stage
For Mama’s little darlin’
What values will she fall back on
When no one’s at her beck and call
What will she do when the curtain falls
On Mama’s little darlin’
Mama’s little darlin’, Mama’s little dear
She’s not as picture perfect as she’s learned how to appear
No, she’s Mama’s little darlin’
Mama’s little lamb
Turns on the cute and charmin’
Will she ever understand
That she’s just Mama’s little darlin’, Mama’s pride & joy
Wind her up, watch her smile, she’s Mama’s ego toy
Yes, she’s just Mama’s little darlin’, Mama’s little dear
She’s not as picture perfect as she’s learned how to appear
No, she’s Mama’s little, Mama’s little, Mama’s little darlin’…
MIND THE MEMORIES Words & Music by Kathy Martin © 2004
So many friends I have made my way on down the road I hold them in my heart and I never feel alone
I think of all the laughter and the good times that we shared I hope that you'll remember me and know how much I care
Mind the memories Keep them safe and warm Take them out on lonely days when a smile can stay the storm I will do the same I'll hold them in my heart and we will always stay as friends tho' we're miles apart
Mind the memories Keep them safe and sound Until we chance to meet again Love is Friendship, found

All I Want To Do Is Love You
Words & Music by Kathy Martin©1979
You make me want to smile and that’s not easy
It’s taken quite a while for me to see
That all the good things coming true are all because of you
I can’t believe you’re happening to me
It sometimes seems as though you’ve always known me
With each and every thought, I think of you
And anytime I’m down you always seem to be around
With loving arms that help to see me through
(Chorus) And I love you
I said I’d never say those words again
But looking in your eyes I see all you mean to me, and then
All I want to do is love you
It’s been said that good things never last long
And I know you’ve got your traveling to do
And I have to sing, but I can promise you one thing
The love songs, they’ll always be for you
I know it won’t be long ‘til you’ll be going on
And I’ll be on my way and going too
But we’re here together now and that’s enough for me somehow
Precious time to last my whole life through
(Chorus)
I said I’d never say those words again
But looking in your eyes I see all you mean to me, and then
All I want to do is love you.
MOTHER, MAY I
Words & Music by Kathy Martin ©2003
A benevolent protagonist
In a story of sacrifice
You intimately identify
With never-ending compromise
You believe what you believe
And you don’t apologize
Mother, may I
Tell you why I
Love the gift of you
You’re tough and you’re tender
Never idle or lazy
And like every good Mom
You worry like crazy
You’ve earned my respect
Although you don’t expect it
You give me all you’ve got
And I know you don’t regret it
Mother, may I
Tell you why I
Love the gift of you
And you know what it really takes to make it through the day
You walk a path of faith and kindly show us all the way
In the simple act of caring, no matter come what may…
You’re stronger than you think
And wiser through the years
No one gets the satisfaction
Of seeing you in tears
You’re proud and you’re beautiful
Without putting on an act
And when I ask, you tell me true
‘Cause you’ve been there and back
Mother, may I
Tell you why I
Love the gift of you
You’re stronger than you think
And much braver than you show
And I love you, Mom, so very much
I just wanted you to know
And Beah Says…
(Words & Music by Kathy Martin © 2004)
In every life, there’s a sense of purpose
Of reason to be and of reason to do
Each one of us must divulge a life quest
And go forth embracing what we choose
In my more than 40 years I’ve turned 40 directions
I’ve chosen to be and I’ve chosen to do
And still I’m not sure I’ve found my real mission
I continue to struggle for my dreams come true
And Beah says that life is the struggle
That strength of conviction is what we must give
The only constant in life is the change we are making
And going from change to change is to live
To strive for a creative poetic license
Is to want for the better in all that I do
To crave Poise and Pride and Dignity assured
Is to walk down the pathway of righteousness, too
To be right might be nice but it’s not all there is
There’s always another unique point of view
To be open to the notion of someone’s opinions
Can shed light on the meaning for me and for you
And Beah says that love can move mountains
That it’s we who choose the serpent over the dove
Just remember the last word has never been spoken
And to comprehend patience and tolerance is to love
In every life, there’s a sense of purpose
Of reason to be and of reason to do
To be open to the notion of someone’s opinions
Can shed light on the meaning for me and for you
And Beah says we can never encumber the truth
Or hide from what we cannot explain
Face the world with your heart and your eyes wide open
Going from change to change may bring pain
But Beah says through pain we gain our character
And we find we are stronger than we knew
Confronting injustice in the smallest of causes
Is to keep the significance of our lives true
And Beah says that life is our struggle
That strength of conviction is what we can give
The only constant in life is the change we are making
And going from change to change is to live
The only constant in life is the change we are making
And Beah says to change is to live
NO ONE ELSE
Words & Music by Kathy Martin ©1980
It’s a cold, wet winter morning
And it’s chilling me to the bone
Here I am, it’s exactly seven
I’m still sitting here by the phone
Seems like I spend more time
Just waiting for a word from you
And I’m wondering
How much longer I can see it through
(Chorus) But there’s no one else
can keep me from the rain
and no one else
can shelter all the pain
though loving you is driving me insane
there’s no one else
can make me feel the same
The day is gray around me
It’s kind of hard to hope
The afternoon is passing fast
I’m watching one more soap
These out of town times get me down
I’m feeling awfully blue
And I’m wondering how much longer I can see it through
(Chorus) (2x)
No one else
Can make me feel
the same
BEAUTIFUL
Words & Music by Kathy Martin©2004
A splash of red-orange within tangerine
The fusion of fuchsia and deep forest green
To gaze upon the flowers in the garden on canvas
Is to enter a Technicolor dream
And the beauty is there to behold
To my eyes, it’s beautiful
Seven pink tiny tutus lined up all in a row
Little ballet shoes unsure where to go
With grace not yet learned, not yet memorized
It’s a comically sweet, charming show
And the beauty is there to behold
To my eyes, it’s beautiful
So much fear and trepidation heaped upon us these days
Distraction from living our lives
But we can’t let it jade us or make us forget
That splendor still waits to be seen
We just have to open our eyes
And the beauty is there to behold…
An elderly waitress rides the 5:00 train
Her feet hurt, she’s tired of running all day
Without hesitation, a young man offers his seat
His smile just erased all her pain
And the beauty was there to behold
To my eyes that was beautiful…
Beauty is there to behold
Just open your eyes
It’s beautiful…
Second Chances
Words & Music by Kathy Martin©1982
It used to be when it came down to matters of the heart
The only thing that counted was the love
But now it’s just a dealer’s game, a business from the start
Providing for the time push comes to shove
Afraid of getting burned, too scared to take the plunge
How many times has someone thought that way
And all before they even try to give some of themselves
So they won’t get their hearts stolen away
(Chorus)
They say draw up a contract, sign on the dotted line
And state the rules and regs of your romances
A buy and sell agreement – barter for a mate
That’s the going rate for second chances
Before you take someone for better or for worse
Weigh the consequences carefully
Cause you know from experience the cost of breaking up
Can bury you alive financially
Just take it slow and easy and account for all your time
Make sure balance all the gives and takes
Cause though you’ve tried before to find your peace of mind
Well they say that you can learn from your mistakes
(Chorus)
Now I don’t know if I agree with all this practicality
Where’s the fun without a little spontaneity
It used to be when it came down to matters of the heart
The only thing that counted was the love
(Chorus)
Blessing in Disguise
Words & Music by Kathy Martin©1992
I’m not willing to oblige
Your sensitive compassion for blond hair and blue eyes
So if it’s her you prefer
She’s just a blessing in disguise
No, I don’t have the leisure to contemplate
The expertise with which you manipulate
Or the meaning of this need you have to tempt your fate
Baby, can you possibly appreciate that
I’m not willing to oblige
Your sensitive compassion for blond hair and blue eyes
So if it’s her you prefer
She’s just a blessing in disguise
It’s not easy owning up to being taken for a fool
Especially with her perfume still in the air
But I’ll be damned if you think I’ll let you
see me lose my cool
Oh, pack your bags – you make a lovely pair…
Oh, don’t act so surprised by the situation
I’m beginning to surmise that this is your vocation
To shovel out lines about predestination
Honey, just you listen closely to this revelation
I’m not willing to oblige
Your sensitive compassion for blond hair and blue eyes
So if it’s her you prefer
She’s just a blessing in disguise
She’s just a blessing in disguise
Oh – she is just a blessing in disguise.
Silver Linings
Words & Music by Kathy Martin ©2005
Sally thought her world would end
the day he walked away
Her whole life was wrapped around
what he would do and say
But soon she was standing on her own two feet
watching her children play
She found she had all the strength she’d ever need
and now looks forward to each brand new day
(CHORUS) Silver linings are constantly shining
When bad things happen, there’s bound to be good
Silver linings are found everywhere
You only need to look
Joe was up at 5AM
every day for 18 years
a couple cups of coffee and 60 miles
to a dead-end, boring career
He worked to put food on the table
but they laid him off just shy of his time
But now Joe meets all his buds & pals to go fishin’
and the fishin’ is fine!
(CHORUS)
(BRIDGE)
And the path of good intentions is said to be paved in gold
but silver shines just as fine I’m told...
My life was going 90 miles an hour
‘til I hit that proverbial brick wall
Down for the count, stress & schedules won out
Turns out none of that matters at all
In the time away I have reconsidered
the life I’d been living ‘til then
Now I couldn’t be in a better place, back home
With my family and friends
(CHORUS 3x)
Crystal City Sunset
Words & Music by Kathy Martin©1971
I can’t believe the feeling
That happens every time you look at me
The way your eyes always seem
To touch the deepest crevice of my soul
My mind starts sailing off
On a clear blue sea
Filled with dreams
The clouds that touch the waves that roll
(Chorus) Crystal City water splashes
Over the rocks until it crashes
On the cliff side, still it dashes
Up on the beach, to try and reach
All the Crystal City particles of sand
And there we are
Looking through the sun
Hand in hand, along the sand we run
I never knew a man
Could tie my world around his finger
The way you’ve changed my life
Has go me thinking day is night, and night is day
Let’s just sit and talk awhile
Feel the ocean breezes
The sighs of night
The tender time we won’t let slip away
(Chorus)
And there we are
Looking through the sun
Hand in hand
Along the sand we run
The Stone Bridge Road
Words & Music by Kathy Martin©1998
It’s a sun-drenched October day
The hills glow russet as if they are burning
On a well-traveled country by-way
My heart felt unexpected yearning
Guess I’d forgotten that drive up to Bryce
The charcoaled sign said “Cider Half-Price” so we
Stopped at that stand on the Stone Bridge Road
We’d started out early; it was a cold morning
And I thought you’d completely lost your senses
You had the top down, but you said it’d get warmer
We talked about nothing of real consequence
Until that sign that had made us laugh
‘til we noticed the trees, and the foot-worn path
‘til we walked holding hands down the Stone Bridge Road
And then we were lost in each other’s eyes
Telling each other our hopes and our fears
Recounting all of our previous lives
Sharing the happiness; brushing back tears
Such an amazingly wonderful weekend
All the lamenting and laughter and lust
You were the first to make me feel loved
There was more than physical spark between us
You held me warm in the pale moonlight
That fell over the blankets through the chalet skylight
And then we were lost in each other’s eyes
Telling each other what we needed to hear
Forgetting all of our previous lives
And all the past promises whispered in our ears
It’s a sun-drenched October day
The hills glow russet as if they are burning
I think of you and I can’t help but wonder
Where you are now and if you’ve had this longing
For the feel of the rush of that very first touch
The moment my memory savors of us when we
Walked hand in hand down the Stone Bridge Road
Oh, I remember it now – you took my hand
On the Stone Bridge Road
Can't You Take My Hand
Words & Music by Kathy Martin©1981
Can’t you take my hand
And lead me far away
Away from all this hurried pace
To stand and face the day
In each other’s arms
Just you and me, we’ll sigh
And watch the sun go ‘cross the sky
‘til sunset starts the night
And then, my darling then, when shadows softly fall
We’ll sail on the wings of a love that will take us so high…
Can’t you take my hand.
When, my love, and when?
Do you feel it too?
‘Cause this just a dream of mine
I’m hoping will come true
‘Cause when, my darling, when the shadows softly fall
We’ll sail on the wings of a love that will take us so high…
Is there more to say?
What else can I do?
I’d love to live this dream with you.
Can’t you take my hand?
‘Cause then, my darling then, when shadows softly fall
We’ll sail on the wings of a love that will take us so high…
Can’t you take my hand?
FORTUNES OF WAR
Words & Music by Kathy Martin ©1994
To fight for what was right
brought them to this place
Destiny was written
on each and every face
Brother against brother
Men of different colors
Staring at each other
down the barrels of their guns
Black and white, rich and poor
The ring of freedom never cost us more
For the price of glory is high
It’s paid by the fortunes of war
In every battle fought,
the righteous to defend
A country calls it’s youngest brave
again, and yet again
Prejudice awakens;
precious lives are taken
With hatred and hostility
instilled upon young minds
Opinions become biased;
Compassion – hard to find
Black and white, rich and poor
Though it’s freedom
that the fighting’s for
The price of glory is high
When paid by the fortunes of war
So, here we are again;
A nation sets the stage
A people torn to win;
History turns a page
One side’s cry against subservience
is termed civil disobedience
And we await the consequence of rage
Black and white, rich and poor
Only freedom is worth this dying for
And yes, the price of glory is high
Still paid by the fortunes of war.
Two of a Kind
Words & Music by Kathy Martin© 1981
You came to my rescue and you took me in
Into your arms and your heart
You helped me to see and believe again
In myself and a brand new start
You wiped away tears with one silly smile
And gave me a reason to try
You looked in my eyes and you touched my soul
You showed me how not to cry
(Chorus)
If it wasn’t for you, don’t know what I would do
You know the pain I’ve been through
And I know that you do cause you’ve been through it too
We’re two of kind, me and you
Isn’t there something I can do
You’ve helped me so, well I know that I can help you
So I’ll come to your rescue and I’ll take you in
Into my arms and my heart
I’ll help you to see and believe again
In yourself, and a brand new start
I’ll wipe away tears, and I’ll make you smile
Give you a reason to try
Just look in my eyes, and before you go
I’ll show you how not to cry
(Chorus 2x)
Wandering Ways
Words & Music by Kathy Martin©1991
She waits for him, holding dear
The memory of him holding her
Forgetting how he’s treated her
Because she loves him
She had hoped that through the years
He’d come around, but through her tears
She sees how he’s been insincere
But she loves him
And does he know how easily he can break her heart
Can’t he see his wandering ways are tearing her apart
Wandering ways, Wandering ways
All her love is not enough
To change his wandering ways
She waits for him, a corner booth
Stood up again, oh, it’s no use
The plain and simple truth
Is she still loves him
She knows enough to know that she
Can’t possess a man that free
So it hurts to realize that she
Will always love him
And does he know how easily he can break her heart
Can’t he see his wandering ways are tearing her apart
Wandering ways, Wandering ways
All her love is not enough
To change his wandering ways
I guess that he thought nothing of
How patiently she gave her love
And what would come of traipsing town to town
Now her suitcase sits on the kitchen floor
Her note’s taped to the freezer door
Says she’s leaving, she’s not waiting anymore
He didn’t know how easily he could break her heart
He didn’t see his wandering ways tearing her apart
Wandering ways, Wandering ways
All her love was not enough
To change his wandering ways (repeat)
I Can’t Complain
Words & Music by Kathy Martin © 1994
Most of the time I feel just fine about being alone
I’m doing alright, up at 6, out at night, I’ve had my seeds to sow
But once in a while I can’t find my smile
Or hold back that lonely tear
That’s when it seems a few sweet nothings would be so nice to hear
But I can’t complain
Isn’t it better to love and to lose when it’s not in the cards
No I can’t complain
I would never have met the friends I love now or have gotten this far
God has a plan and I’m sure that I am exactly where I should be
And if things stay the same, I can’t complain
It’s not everyday I start feeling this way about finding someone
I recall what I miss when I see lovers kiss in the setting summer sun
Or see couples sway together as they watch fireworks light up the sky
It’s especially tough to pretend it’s enough
to have everything money can buy
But I can’t complain
A roof over my head and a big warm bed with food in the ‘fridge
No I can’t complain
Or waste time wondering when I’ll come to it, if I never cross that
bridge
God has a plan and I’m sure that I am exactly where I should be
And if things never change, I can’t complain
No I can’t complain
Isn’t it better to love and to lose when it’s not in the cards
No I can’t complain
‘cause I would never have met the friends I love now or have gotten
this far
Yes, God has a plan and I’m sure that I am exactly where I should be
And if things never change…..
I can’t complain
Way Back When
Words & Music by Kathy Martin© 1980
They spend their mornings at the corner drug store
Telling hundred year old stories
With thousand year old eyes
Ones they’ve told a million times before
But everybody listens
And no one seems to tire
Of hearing them all over and again
For they are all the same there
They’re lonely and they’re old
And they miss the days they had way back when
(instrumental)
Oh, they are all the same there
They’re lonely and they’re old
And they can’t give up the way it used to be
They stubborn or they’re proud or they speak a bit too loud
We’re never quite as patient as we should be
And we forget the wisdom of their years
We often are the cause of all their lonely tears
Forgetting too, that we are on our way…
To spending mornings at the corner drug store
Telling hundred year old stories
With thousand year old eyes
Ones we’ll tell a million times or more
But everyone will listen all over and again
When we miss the days we had way back when
We’ll be lonely
We’ll grow old
And we’ll miss the days we had way back when
In The Manner of Grace
Words & Music by Kathy Martin©2004
We were friends in high school, best buddies as they say
Grace and I were always hanging out
We listened to The Monkees -- tried out for the school play
We danced to the Beatles “Twist and Shout”
When we enrolled in college, it wasn’t such a cinch
But Grace made sure we both made it through Yale
And when Jake and I got married, tho’ she was not convinced
It was Grace, through tears, who helped me with my veil
So how could I not have known something was wrong?
It was always she, not me, who was so strong!
That was the manner of Grace
With the smile that lit her face
With the laugh she freely shared with such abandon
How could I not have figured out
She was hiding all her doubts
As her body failed her, holding her for ransom
For more then fifteen years, a kindred kinship we had shared
Through notes and letters, and talking on the phone
And when Lindy was born, my friend Grace made sure that she was
there
To ponder with me the wonder of my precious little one
Excitedly, it was that I revealed my secret big surprise
That my baby’s name was Melinda Grace
She seemed startled, then the tears came quick to both our eyes
As I looked up smiling into Grace’s face…
And then the sinking feeling as she stood over my bed
That she hadn’t told me what she all that she was in for
And when she knew I knew with that one glance, she just smiled and
shook her head
No spoken words could ever express more
I knew that it was my turn to be strong
That I’d have to be the one to carry on
In the manner of Grace
With the smile that lit her face
With the laugh she freely shared with such abandon
I made sure that I was right there by her side
I held her hand… I said goodbye…
And so Melinda Grace, with that smile that lights your little face
And a laugh that so reminds me of my friend
I’ll keep you warm, I’ll keep you safe
And with my memories of Grace
I’ll hold you in my heart till my life ends
I’ll teach you love with a little grace
is all it ever takes
to be someone’s best and cherished friend.
Yes, we were friends in high school….
Wildflower
Words & Music by Kathy Martin©2006
Rare and unrefined; it’s who and what you are
Like dandelion wine, or like a shooting star
A bittersweet nightshade-colored sky’s your lullaby
As you sway and sigh
You’re a wildflower
You inadvertently settle on everything you do
Unconscious of the consequence of always being true
You can only be
Who you truly are
Like Meadow Blazing Star
You’re a wildflower
And wildflowers grow where they will
Wildflowers know only time will tell
Time isn’t always ours to presume
Yet a Wildflower blooms and grows
Only a Wildflower knows
You’re so honest and natural and genuine
Never lacking a sympathetic state of mind
And like a blanket of Sweet Yellow Clover
You spread comfort all over
You’re a wildflower
And wildflowers grow where they will
Wildflowers know only time will tell
Time isn’t always ours to presume
Yet a Wildflower blooms and grows
Only a Wildflower knows
As Evening Primrose blows a kiss with its perfume
Another night rising, another silvery moon
All the dreams that you chase
Through your bed of Queen Anne’s lace
Quite a dazzling bouquet do you make
Sunshine and raindrops seem to know
how the wind will tell you where to go
And since time isn’t always ours to presume
A Wildflower blooms and grows
And you’re a Wildflower
Such as Wildflower
As only a Wildflower
Knows…
Let it Go
Words & Music by Kathy Martin©1994
You were my knight in tarnished armor, my charming prince of play
My object of desire -- you swept my sense away
You were the best of all my good times
And Lord, you could make me mad
Tho’ I’d never change a moment in the crazy life we had
Under the circumstances, and all things considered
In the light of all we know now, I have to let you go now
I was the shy and naïve good girl who never broke a rule
Who reveled in resistance no matter what you’d pull
But you had me double taking glances
And thinking hot, wild thoughts
My worn-down will never stood a chance --
One kiss – and I was caught
Under the circumstances, and all things considered
In the light of all we know now, you have to let me go now
You were dangerous -- spontaneous
And you made me feel so absolutely alive
But we’re out of control -- no direction to go
I need more in my life now than one long thrill ride
Don’t think I haven’t noticed how bored you seem to be
How restless and uneasy at the thought of family
I know you care in your own way
I’ll always love you, too
And so we’ll always feel this way, we both know what to do
Under the circumstances, and all things considered
In the light of all we know now, we have to let it go now
Under the circumstances, and all things considered
In the light of all we know now, we have to let it go now
We have to let it go now
We have to let it go now
Wishful Thinking
Words & Music by Kathy Martin©1984
House on the beach, just out of reach
of the everyday race
Time in the sun, a new life’s begun –
lackadaisical pace
All day to do, just me and you –
oh, whatever the mood
I’m daydreaming, scheming, and wishful thinking
of a kiss, and a warm embrace
Snowbound, hanging around,
night before Christmas Eve
Picture you there, top of the stair,
looking down, smiling at me
Snow falls and you gently call –
oh, that’s when I fall
I’m daydreaming, scheming, and wishful thinking
And I’m wearing my heart on my sleeve
(instrumental break)
Here all alone, thoughts tend to roam
to a make-believe scene
But no matter where, you’re always there
So I know it’s a dream
I’m daydreaming, scheming, and wishful thinking
I love you, but you don’t know
I’m daydreaming, scheming, and wishful thinking
And it’s time to get on with the show
I’m daydreaming, scheming, and wishful thinking
It’s time to get on, time to go on with the show….
Love is the Answer
Words & Music by Kathy Martin©1993
Chorus: Love is the answer, baby
Love is the question, darlin’
Love can cause you heartbreak, baby, but
Love can bring you joy
(Don’t you know when) Love is the question, honey
that Love is the answer, darlin’
And it’s out there somewhere waiting
In each girl and every boy
It’s been said that it’s all it takes to make the world go ‘round
So why do we twist our fate
and turn the whole world upside down
Our kids have become jaded; no one even knows what grace is
How can they hope to understand
when they see color-coded faces (I say)
(Chorus)
(Bridge) It’s there in each and every soul
who tries to find someone to hold
If only we could comprehend
that love starts with a friend – Oh,
But every day in every way it seems that we’ve stopped trying
How can we live our lives each day
while there are children dying
Do we need to be more convinced to break down our defenses
What more will it take to bring us
all back to our senses ( I think)
(Chorus)
(Modulate Chorus, with answering lead vocals)
Love is the answer, baby (LOVE)
Love is the question, darlin’ (LOVE IS THE ANSWER)
Love can cause you hearbreak, baby (TO THE ONLY
QUESTION THAT SHOULD MATTER)
Love can bring you joy (Don’t you know when)
Love is the question, honey (DO WE CARE?)
that Love is the answer, darlin’ (WILL WE SHARE?)
And it’s out there somewhere waiting (LOVE IS OUT THERE)
In each girl and every boy (WAITING – OH)
(LOVE, LOVE IS THE ANSWER)
Lullaby
Words & Music by Kathy Martin©1981/2005
Hush now, don’t you cry
Off you go, beddieby
Here is a lullaby to sing you goodnight
Listen to a nightingale
And off to dreamland you will sail
If you just close your eyes
He’ll sing you goodnight
Don’t you fear, I’ll be right here
To tuck you in so tight
So snuggle down in your bed
You’re warm and safe tonight
Sleep now, darling dear,
Sweet dreams are almost here
Here is your lullaby
My Baby, goodnight
Don’t you fear I’ll be right here
Until the morning light
So snuggle down in your bed
You’re safe with me tonight
Hush now, don’t you cry
Off you go beddieby
This is your lullaby
My Baby, goodnight
Go to sleep, now close your eyes
My Baby, goodnight

Grandma’s Apron
By Kathy Martin©2006
Up in the attic, Spring-cleaning time
Dust rag in hand, a quarter past nine
I opened the trunk lid to start clearing clothes
And what do you suppose…
I found it there, atop the old things
Folded so neat, pretty as you please
It brought back all of my fondest memories
Just a piece of old cloth you might say
But it was so much more in her day…
Grandma’s Apron was summertime
And meant apple pies and fresh peas from the vine
It carried the kindling and wiped tears from our eyes
When we skinned our knees from our climbing
Grandma’s Apron was a flag excitedly waved
When company came unexpected some days
But not until it dusted all the furniture quick
And then became the place we shyer kids hid
We hid behind Grandma’s Apron
And when the chickens laid especially well
Grandma and I’d go to the coop for a spell
Collect all the perfectly beautiful eggs
And carry them in in her apron
Then we’d make up the cookie dough, flour & eggs
She kept chocolate chips right beside the healthy raisins
She’d wipe her brow and then my nose with her apron
And we’d eat half the batch before we’d be done
Oh, I remember Grandma’s Apron
Yes, I found it there, atop the old things
Folded so neat, pretty as you please
It brought back all of my fondest memories
Just a piece of old cloth, you might say
But it was more – so much more in her day…
Grandma’s Apron
Grandma’s Apron
Grandma’s Apron
Yes, I remember Grandma’s Apron
Where You’ve Been
Kathy Martin©2007
I often wonder what it would be like
To have a place of my own
Nothing pretentious or at all outrageous
Just a little space to call home
And I sometimes wonder what it would be like
If one day, out of the blue
I’d answer a knock on my new front door
And standing there would be you…
Where’ve you been?
How’s it going?
Haven’t heard from you in so long.
How’s the wife?
Hope the kids are fine.
When I left, things were so wrong
But I never stopped thinking about you…
Where’ve you been?
Where’ve you been?
How ya feeling?
Through the grapevine, I’ve heard it’s been rough
Hope you’re well now
Hope you’re happy
And have found some work you can love
‘cause I never stopped caring about you…
Where’ve you been?
Do you believe in second chances?
I’ve always wanted to…
Has this time apart given you the heart
To care enough for a brand new start?
Where’ve you been?
How’s it going?
Haven’t heard from you in a while
How’s the music?
Are you writing?
Can’t tell you how much I’ve missed your smile.
See, I never stopped thinking about you…
Or where you’ve been…
Where’ve you been?
I often wonder….
CIBOLO CREEK
Kathy Martin©2004
Just off Interstate 10, down Farm Road 78
When he came to Cibolo Creek, his sins were washed away
It’d been raining hard that night. Lightning lit the Texas sky.
That’s how he saw her standing lost, with no one else in sight.
She was maybe four years old, a doll held tight in her arms
Drenched and shivering – scared to death, crying for her dad and mom.
He wondered just for a second if he should even try to help
What if someone got the wrong idea; he’d be right back in that cell
But he stopped his truck, he picked her up, and with a blanket in the front
seat
Rain-soaked and tired to the bone, she curled up fast asleep
Just off Interstate 10, down Farm Road 78
When he came to Cibolo Creek, his sins were washed away
He drove on about two miles or so, saw lights bobbing in the trees
When he told them that he’d found the girl, her father fell to his knees
“We just lost her mother to the raging water, I thought I’d lost her too
Thank God you stopped and saved my girl – I didn’t know what I’d do.”
Now that dad didn’t know his girl’s savior had a shady past in his wake
All he knew was his daughter was safe and sound… and he had a stranger
to thank.
Some men might make a mess of it, choosing every path that’s wrong
Without a kind or considerate thought, they don’t know how to belong
But he’d changed and made amends, and the second chance he’d found –
That night proved, if only to himself – he’d turned his life around.
Just off Interstate 10, down Farm Road 78
When he came to Cibolo Creek, his sins were washed away
Just off Interstate 10, down Farm Road 78
When he came to Cibolo Creek…..
his sins were washed away
his sins were washed away
all his sins were washed away
his sins were washed away
